Top Ten Tuesday: Best & Worst Movie Adaptations
Top Ten Tuesdays is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
Top Ten Book To Movie Adaptations:
(1) Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
What??? You thought I was going to make a list without HP on it…as if! This was my favourite of all the books & movies - I loved the whole time travel element & thought the movie handled that really effectively! Plus Sirius Black is one of my favourite characters! Alfonso Cuarón's direction was brilliant!
(2) The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
I thought the movie did an excellent job of telling the story & bring to life the magic of Narnia. The acting from all the kids was really great too - I mean the look on Lucy's face when she entered Naraia for the first time was magical.
(3) A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
I absolutely adored this story as a kid. This was the first movie I ever saw at the cinema, so that may have effected my memories of this movie - but I still love it to this day, but I still love it to this day! (Interestingly it was also directed by Alfonso Cuarón, clearly I think he's awesome!)
(4) Anne Of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I loved the three movies made from these books. I thought they timed the filming of them well, by having actress who played Anne age in-between the movies. She had grown as an actress & a character and portrayed her fiery personality just like in the books.
(5) The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Such a beautiful story - the movie really embraced the cold & bleak setting of the estate, and was such a contrast to the bright & beautiful garden. I have to admit I watched the movie first with this one :)
(6) The Other Bolelyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
After reading this books I was so excited that it was being made into a movie, but I was so disappointed with the result. It just didn't capture the scandal & intrigue of court life that where in the book. I also felt there were some important scenes and even a character that was left out. Overall the movie was just dull.
(7) Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
The book was so amazing & magical! I'd say many of us book lovers dream about being able to enter the world of the books they read, but the movie just didn't work form. I mean Brendan Frasier…seriously??? What where they thinking?
(8) The Da Vinci Code By Dan Brown
I was pestered into reading this book and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It was intriguing, but I felt the movie didn't capture the suspense that I felt in the book - to be honest I found the movie quite boring.
(9) Charlie & The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
I'm referring to the original movie here - which I felt had a serious creep factor to it. I loved the books as a kid and the movie really didn't have the same atmosphere to it.
(10) A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
This movie was a complete mess to me - I felt like they were trying to be too clever and it just completely backfired.
Well those are my Top Ten Ten - what about yours?

I heard the Inkheart movie wasn't that great.

It was mainly Brendan Fraiser that I didn't like - it probably would have been alright had it been a different actor :(
DeleteOh, I love The Secret Garden, the remake too!
ReplyDeleteIt was such a sweet story :)
DeleteHP and the Prisoner of Azkaban was so well done. It's my second favorite of the movies but only 4th favorite of the books.
ReplyDeleteI never saw The DaVinci Code, but Angels and Demons made my list. Not well done at all.
Yeah sadly the Dan Brown books have not made successful movies in my opinion. But HP will always be amazing to me :)
DeleteIt's not on your list, but your list just made me think of Little Women! I loved that movie and book. A Little Princess and The Secret Garden were amazing movies! Awesome list.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah of course I didn't think of Little Women that was a great book & movie! I always think of better answers when I see everyone else's list haha :)
DeleteGoing through all these TTT has made me watch all the Harry Potter movies all over again! The Prisoner of Azkaban was a great one! Great list!

Yay to Harry Potter!!!
DeleteI'm still waiting to see an adaptation of A Little Princess that has the original ending. Both the Liesel Matthews version (1995) and the Shirley Temple version (1939) -- arguably the most popular and well-known adaptations -- had the same happily ever after. It's not that I don't like happy endings; I'm just curious as to why the filmmakers decided to use the same alternate ending.
ReplyDeleteI haven't actually seen the Shirley Temple version, but I loved the Liesel Mettews version! I have to admit that I love the HEA ending, even though it wasn't authentic to the book. But I'm a sucker for a good HEA :D
DeleteYAY HARRY POTTER!!!! I loved PoA. I know some people will argue that, but oh well. It was the best out of all the movies in my opinion too! And I agree with Da Vinci Code. I didn't hate the movie, but it definitely didn't live up to the book' standards. I think I read Secret Garden when I was younger, but I really only remember watching the movie so I couldn't put it on my list.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by earlier Amy!
Jessica@Lovin' Los Libros
Yeah I know people will disagree about HP & POA, and I know they changed some stuff, like when Harry gets the broom at the end instead half way through etc. But I still loved both the book & the movie :)
DeleteReally great list! I forgot about Anne of Green Gables.
ReplyDeleteAnne was actually one of the first real novels that I ever read, so I guess I'll always have a soft spot for it :)
DeleteAwesome list! I agree with the HARRY POTTER bit. Indeed book three was amazing. It's my favorite too. Cheers to Potterheads! The Chronicles of Narnia was great as well. I love this post!
ReplyDeleteAnne of -Anne's Scribbles and Doodles
Woo hoo for Potterheads!!! Potter fans are the most awesome of people :D
Deletethe Harry Potter is the first in my list.
ReplyDeletei must to read it again in summer, also the movies
but now it is over ,i can't accept it.
I know, I miss having a new book or movie coming out each year lol :)
DeleteI'm a bit late in catching up with my comments and such this week. I didn't like the film for POA. It's actually my least favourite of the movies. I think it's because I hated how they made werewolf-Lupin look. That ain't a werewolf, that's an alien. Or maybe a goblin. In any case it reminded my of that creature in the Lord of the Rings films that hisses when it speaks. My favourite HP movie is actually HBP. Goblet of Fire is my favourite of all the books though.
ReplyDeleteI used to love the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie, but I was seriously disappointed after I actually read the book and saw how wonderful Roald Dahl's world was. I like the newer one - it's so much more like the book.
Haha - I do agree with you about the werewolf thing - he did look kinda weird and alien like :) I guess what I loved about this book/movie was Sirius Black, I was so devastated when he died.
DeleteI guess because I read Charlie & The Chocolate Factory before any of the movies I had this image in my head of how it should look, and I just didn't get that from the first movie sadly, although I know a lot of people loved it.
Thanks for stopping by Chantelle :)
