COM

"The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read."

Question:
Q: What is your preferred reading format? Hardcover, eBooks or paperback?

Well I'm gonna start by saying that although I was totally against eBooks at first, I now love them! Yes they are convenient, you can carry thousands of books with you everywhere, you can buy them instantly while sitting at home in your fluffy bunny slippers & they are often very cheap!

But what I love the most about eBooks is that so many great indie authors have been able to put their books out there for people like us to read :D

But…no matter how great eBooks are I will always love my printed books, especially hardcovers. I usually get my favourite books or series in hardcover.

What's so great about printed books you ask?

Well I love the feel of them my hands…the velvety dust jacket with the metallic embossed lettering…the crinkle of the paper as you turn the page and the smell…oh how I love the smell of a good book. Yes that's right, my secret is out - I sniff books!

Okay I got a little carried away there - I'll stop now ;)

Title: Angel Burn
Series: Angel #1
Author: L.A. Weatherly
Published: September 30th 2010
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: 4.5/5

"Morning." The muscles of his chest moved as he leaned over and kissed me. Long, slow, deep. He smelled of sleep and a warm smell that was just Alex. I felt myself falling.

"That . . . is such a nice way to wake up," I murmured when the kiss ended. Alex stroked my cheek with the backs of his fingers. "Not as nice as just waking up and seeing you there, lying beside me. I thought for a second I must be dreaming."

"Was it a nice dream?" I asked. I couldn't stop smiling.

He grinned; his dark hair was rumpled from sleep. "Oh, yes. It was a very, very nice dream."

We kissed again. It grew deeper; Alex wrapped his arms around me, drawing me close against him. His back was smooth and warm. I ran my hands over it as we kissed, loving the feel of his skin, and almost went faint as his lips moved briefly to my neck and then found my mouth again. In my entire life, nothing had ever felt as good as Alex kissing me like that. When we finally pulled apart, both our hearts were pounding.

Well who wouldn't want to wake up to a shirtless Alex? Willow is one luck girl :D

So what's making you swoon this week?

Title: Angel Burn
Series: Angel #1
Author: L.A. Weatherly
Published: September 30th 2010
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: 4.5/5

BLURB:
They're out for your soul.
And they don't have heaven in mind...

Willow knows she's different from other girls, and not just because she loves tinkering with cars. Willow has a gift. She can look into the future and know people's dreams and hopes, their sorrows and regrets, just by touching them. she has no idea where this power comes from. But the assassin, Alex, does. Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows more about Willow than Willow herself does. He knows that her powers link to dark and dangerous forces and that he's one of the few humans left who can fight them. When Alex finds himself falling in love with his sworn enemy, he discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all good and evil.

***Mild Spoilers***

"He bent his head, and I caught my breath as his warm mouth nuzzled at my neck. I hadn't gotten even remotely used yet to how good it felt to be kissed by Alex."

THE GOOD:
The story:
This story is quite creative, I like the idea that angels could actually be evil instead of…well..angelic. With these evil angels actually making humans ill by draining their energy. It was quite interesting how the world took shape as new revelations were revealed. Once Willow discovers her true identity she struggles with idea that she could be dangerous and has to learn to embrace her new self in order to protect innocent people from being brainwashed by the Angel that have invaded earth.

Surprisingly for a story involving angels and churches, it didn't become preachy. The Church Of Angels is depicted as a cult & doesn't really represent a real religion. Religion wasn't really discussed in either a positive or negative light.

The characters:
Both Willow & Alex are pretty standard characters for a paranormal romance novel. Willow is quiet, innocent & inexperienced in love. While Alex has seen the 'bad side' of the world & wants to protect Willow. Apart they are quite simple characters, but somehow, when together they are so much more. For a large part of this book it really just consists of Willow & Alex, and the complex relationship that builds between them is what makes their characters come alive.

The romance:
In a way the romance did have a hint of insta-love, in the fact that they do fall for each other over a very short period of time. However because a lot happens in that short time, we do get the opportunity to get to know the characters and see their relationship develop, from mutual distrust, to respect and then of course love. They spend so much time confined in the car and hotel rooms trying to evade the Angels that they learn a lot about one another and I found there romance to be really beautiful and most importantly believable!

THE BAD:
The Dialogue:
Generally the writing was good, however there were just a couple of times the dialogue got a little mushy between Alex & Willow. I did catch myself rolling my eyes here & there. But not really a big issue.

FINAL WORD:
Overall this story was a creative twist on angels concept. The story doesn't finish on a cliff hanger, but there are definitely a lot a unanswered questions & I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!

CONTENT:
Sexuality: mild-medium / heavy kissing, discussions of sex
Violence: mild-medium / angels being killed - no blood or gore etc
Language: mild
Drugs & alcohol: mild / one main character drinks (not drunk)

BLURB:
When Hana Fisher moves to the small town of Mixon, Texas to live with her dad, she dreads having to work at the boring pile of dirt he fondly calls a motocross track. But when she gets there, she finds the rinky-dink dirt bike track from her childhood has grown into the most respected racing track in the state.

Now popular by association, Hana endures the pain and sweat of working in the summer heat in order to fit in with a sport she’s growing to love. She gets a real family, a best friend and not just one, but two of the fastest racers trying to win her heart.

When Hana abuses her status as the track owner’s daughter to help the gorgeous Ryan Russo cheat in the biggest race of the year, she risks more than just losing her job. Every good thing in her life is at stake now- her friends, her dad’s trust, and Ash Carter- the kind-hearted racer who may not be as alluring as Ryan, but is proof that nice guys don’t always finish last.

***Mild Spoilers***

REVIEW:

The story:
The story begins with Hana running away from her mum's house after a fight. She ends up at her Dad's place, where he runs his Motocross track next-door. At first she thinks she won't be welcome, but they are more than happy for her to stay for the Summer.

Now I have to say that is was so refreshing to have a family that actually cared about the heroine. So often the parents are verbally or physically abusive, drug addicts/dealers or simply don't even notice their kid exists. Although yes Hana's mother is shallow and quite oblivious to her daughter, she's not really in the story much - it's all about Hana moving in with her loving father, sweet stepmother & little step brother.

We then follow Hana as she helps out at the track & becomes part of the 'motocross family'. She meets hot boys, new friends, hot boys, bikes and did I mention all the hot boys? Along the way there are crushes, confusion, mistakes, regrets, broken hearts and lots of breakfast burritos (I've never heard of these and to be honest it sounds disgusting to eat a burrito for breakfast - but then again I'm an Aussie and love Vegemite on my toast, so who am I to talk!!)

The characters:
At first I thought I wasn't going to like Hana, I felt she was a little self absorbed and quite shallow - the only things she thought about were boys & clothes. Then I remembered that she's a teenager, and that is exactly what teenage girls think about! Also, lets not forget she's grown up home schooled by her Mother - a self absorbed women on her 5th marriage - note exactly the best role model! Most of Hana's actions reminded me just how blind & naive teenagers can be. And naive she was - she's easily swayed by Ryan's arrogant charm & makes some very bad decisions, but towards the end of the story she starts to grow and become a stronger person.

Both Ash & Shelby (Ash's sister) were a good influence on Hana, showing her that looks & money are not everything in life. They were much more down to earth & I really liked them both! Ash genuinely cares for Hana, wanting to do things right with her & not rush their relationship & I really respected him for that.

Ryan - well I didn't like him from the beginning. He was slimy and way too smooth. I could smell the nasty scent of his overpowering cologne dripping off him in every scene. Arrogance is such a turn off to me, so I'm not really sure what Hana saw in him - oh yeah…it must have been those damn trance inducing muscles!

The romance:
There was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted Hana to choose Ash. But she was blinded by Ryan's 'hot looks' and winning record - she is oblivious to his self absorbed attitude and his real intentions for pursuing her. Ash was so sweet & caring, but Hana can't stop drooling over Ryan's muscles long enough to notice this. I liked that Ash & Hana did become friends as the story progressed, so although she was still pursuing Ryan, they were getting closer - it made their romance more believable when she did wake up to Ash's awesomeness! Now I don't want to ruin the ending, but I will say that the last scene was really sweet and made me like Ash even more :)

The Writing:
Hana's narration is very sarcastic, and it was a strong theme throughout. I felt this gave a good impression of her personality. It also showed that when she acted differently around Ryan, she wasn't being herself. But around Ash her real personality comes out because she doesn't feel like she needs to be anything else.

I did feel like the ending was a slightly rushed. After the climax of the story, a lot happens very quickly and I would have liked to of seen some of these things happen in more detail. But I was still really happy with the ending - especially that last scene!

FINAL WORD:
This is a light & breezy Summer YA novel that's perfect for an afternoon in sunshine! The motocross setting was really different & interesting and makes for some exciting racing scenes! I can definitely see a companion novel for Shelby - I really loved her character and would love to see more her & her skinny nerdy motocross boy! (What can I say - I like my nerds hehe!)

FAVOURITE QUOTES:
"I have an easygoing job outdoors with little supervision, great pay and dozens of hot guys who prefer to walk around shirtless. Life is pretty sweet."
(I am officially jealous of a fictional character)

"You didn't exactly talk to me either." - Ryan
Unable to control my shock, I let my jaw fall open.
"Are you serious? You're the guy…you're supposed to call me."
(Hell yeah - you tell him Hana!)

"It didn't seem possible that someone who was so perfect a week ago is now so indisputably not perfect. Had his charming smile and muscular physique blinded me?
(Yes sweetheart, they did - but who can blame you :)

"What I used to see in Ryan as confidence is now just arrogance."
(*applauds* Hana you are becoming very very smart!)

"He is dressed in his riding pants and boots but isn't wearing a shirt. My imagination slips away from me and I think about how gorgeous he would look if the clouds darkened and it suddenly started pouring rain."
(Haahhaa hilarious daydreaming by Hana - love it!)

"There is a collective energy in the air. Everyone is high on anticipation (or exhaust fumes)"
(Well, that explains a lot!)

CONTENT:
Sexuality: mild / some kissing
Violence: mild
Language: mild

Top Ten Tuesday: Books Read in 2013

30
COM

Top Ten Tuesdays is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books I've Read So Far In 2013:

This was a seriously difficult list to make…I have read some really amazing books so far this year!

(1) On An Edge Of Glass by Autumn Doughton (March 9th 2013)
Seriously one of the best books I've read in a long long time! I loved this so much I can't even tell you - a musician hero this isn't a complete douche, a heroine that isn't a whiny crying pain in the neck and a healthy romantic and humorous storyline!!! OMG it is AMAZING!

(2) Wait For You by J. Lynn (February 26th 2013)
Well it should be no surprise to anyone that I have a JLA book on my list :) She is too awesome for words and so is this book!

(3) Pushing The Limits by Katie McGarry (July 31st 2012)
I was surprise by how emopitinoal this story was - I got so invested in Echo & Noah's story I was lost to the world when reading it. I don't normally like bad boy heros, but Noah is not a simple 'bad boy' and he at the top of my book boyfriend list!

(4) Dare You To by Katie McGarry (May 28th 2013)
Katie McGarry did it again with the sequel to Pushing the Limits! I was soo devastated for Isaiah when I I found out Beth falls for new guy Ryan. But McGarry thourghly convinced me that Beth & Ryan were perfect for on another! I have no doubt that the 3rd book Crash into You will be on my end of year Top Ten :)

(5) Suddenly Royal by Nichole Chase (April 23rd 2013)
I think this book basically consisted of every girl's fairytale dream, discovering she's a duchess & falling in love with a sexy as hell prince. And of course there is plenty of sexy time on her new estate *wink wink*

(6) Emblaze by Jessica Shirvington (March 5th 2013)
Ahh Jessica Shirvington…I love you ** This series is simple AMAZING and for any YA fantasy/paranormal lovers out there - YOU MUST READ THIS!!!

(7) The Coincidence Of Callie & Kayden by Jessica Sorensen (Dec 13th 2012)
Such an emotional story with strong characters - this one was really beautiful! Only problem was a killer cliff hanger!

(8) A Song For Julia by Charles Sheehan-Miles (Dec 4th 2012)
This was one a beautifully written romance by a male author! Crank, a musician and Julia a diplomats daughter don't make sense on paper, but their relationship was so beautiful to watch unfold. Both have had tough lives for different reasons, but together with their mutual love of music they learn how to be happy!

(9) The Only Exception by Magan Vernon (April 9th 2013)
Loved this political new adult romance - it was refreshing to have such a feisty heroine! Monica stood up for what she believed in, as did Trey. They often clashed heads in political class at college, but that didn't stop them falling in love!

(10) Getting Away With It by Julie Cohen (Sept 13th 2011)
I love Julie Cohen's writing style - she writes really beautiful romances with humour. With Liza impersonating her sister Lee you know there are going to be some hilarious moments in this book. Plus there's Will, the dishy British love interest - need I say more!

I also have to make mentions of some other amazing books that just missed the list:

Lost by Nadia Simonenko (March 25th 2013)
Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris (April 24th 2012)
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund (Jun 12th 2012)
Angel Burn by L.a Weatherly (May 24th 2011)
Animal Instincts by Nell Dixon (March 1st 2009)

Well those are my Top Ten - what are the best books you've read so far this year?

Title: Precious Things
Author: Stephanie Parent
Published: June 4th 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Summary from Goodreads:
Isabelle Andrews isn’t supposed to be here. She isn’t supposed to be a freshman at Hartford Community College, she isn't supposed to be living at home and working at her dad’s failing bakery, and she definitely isn’t supposed to be taking Intro to Electronic Music Production, a class that will get her nowhere toward her goal of an English Lit Ph.D. by age twenty-five. But when her dad’s latest business fiasco eats up her college fund, Hartford Community College is exactly where Isabelle finds herself—and thanks to her late enrollment, she doesn’t even get to choose her classes. Stuck with Electronic Music and way-too-easy English courses, Isabelle is determined to wallow in all the misery she feels entitled to.

But community college brings some unexpected benefits…like the fact that a certain overworked, over-scheduled Electronic Music professor hands over most of his duties to his teaching assistant. His tall, green-eyed, absolutely gorgeous teaching assistant. When TA Evan Strauss discovers Isabelle’s apathy toward electronic music—and, well, all music—he makes it his mission to convert her. The music Evan composes stirs something inside Isabelle, but she can’t get involved—after all, she’ll be transferring out as soon as possible.

Still, no matter how tightly Isabelle holds on to her misery, she finds it slipping away in the wake of all Hartford Community offers: new friendships, a surprisingly cool poetry professor, and most of all, Evan. But Evan’s dream of owning his own music studio is as impractical as Isabelle’s dad’s bakery, and when Evan makes a terrible decision, everything Isabelle has gained threatens to unravel. Soon Isabelle discovers that some of the most important lessons take place outside the classroom…and that in life, as in Evan’s favorite Depeche Mode song, the most precious things can be the hardest to hold on to.

Rating: 4.5/5

"He's lips brush gently against my skin, hovering tenuously above me as I tremble in excitement, and just as I feel I can't wait another second, he dives in and lets me join him in a loving passionate, kiss. He softly caresses my cheek as our lips play together, and an uncontrollable shiver shoots down my spine, igniting every nerve it passes on the way...

...My brain is so lost in the haze of desire that it's letting my body do what it want without question now, and it doesn't even register when my hand darts out and grabs his again. I pant breathlessly, gasping for air between kisses as I wrap one leg around him and pull his hand down to the hem of my skirt."

Maria and Owen are both so adorably innocent and their intimate scenes are so sweet. I loved these two so much :)

Title: Romancing The R.A.
Author: Ashelyn Drake
Published: May 28th 2013
Genre: New Adult Romance

Summary from Goodreads:
Noelle Buckman is looking forward to making a fresh start in college, one that doesn’t involve immature high school boys. The second she steps on campus for freshman orientation, she can sense the possibilities. Especially when she spots Andy, a resident advisor who’s not just hot but also thoughtful enough to open doors for a girl.

And Andy has his eye on Noelle. Even when her nerves take control and she thinks she comes off as a hillbilly with no direction, Andy can see what she’s really like and he’s more than a little interested.

But orientation is less than two full days and there’s an entire summer between Noelle and Andy. Will her attempt to romance the R.A. be as short-lived as college orientation?

***Excerpt***
He’s stunned at first and doesn’t move. I start to pull away, thinking I’ve made a huge mistake, but then I feel Andy’s hand on my lower back, pulling me closer. His lips part, and he deepens the kiss.

Every inch of me is on fire. Andy’s an incredible kisser, but the position we’re in is awkward. I reach my hands up and bury my fingers in his hair, which prompts him to lift me onto his lap. Much better. Our bodies are pressed so close I can feel every inch of him. My lungs are screaming for air, but I’m not willing to give in to them. I’ve been dying to kiss Andy ever since he first smiled at me, and I’ll be damned if I’m backing away that quickly.

His hands move up my back to my hair, and he pulls my head back gently exposing my neck. His lips trail down my jaw and to the nape of my neck. I bite my lip to stifle a moan, but it manages to slip out anyway. Andy slowly eases off, opening his eyes to see my reaction. I debate pulling his lips back to mine, but for the moment I drape my arms around his shoulders and just stare into his baby blue eyes.

“Wow.”

He can say that again. “Yeah.”

“I can honestly say that’s the first time I didn’t have to make the first move.”

“And it’s the first time I ever made the first move.”
He smiles. “Then I’m honored.” He leans forward and places a single kiss on my neck. His hips rise under me, and I know exactly where he’s hoping this is going to lead. My body is screaming for his touch, but I don’t want to be that girl. The one who goes off to college and sleeps with the first guy she meets. As much as I want Andy, I can’t do this right now.

Well what can I say her books are on my auto buy list, and after reading so many excerpts on Swoon Thursday I have to read it!

(10) Romancing The Bookworm by Kate Evangelista (July 9th 2013)
This looks like a super sweet little summer romance story that I just can't pass up :)

Well those are my Top Ten - what's on your Summer TBR list?
